Sawahlunto (ANTARA) - Mayor of Sawahlunto, West Sumatra Deri Asta will attend the 43rd World Heritage Committee session which will be held on June 29 to July 10, 2019 in Azerbaijan following the entry of Sawahlunto City as a candidate for a world heritage site by UNESCO.
"Previously, every country submitted its sites that wanted to be a world heritage area to UNESCO, including Indonesia. The city of Sawahlunto was also listed with the theme 'Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto," he said in Sawahlunto on Friday.
He said that UNESCO as the institution responsible for the assessment had conducted research with a designated team named ICOMOS.
The latest information from ICOMOS, the theme of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto in the administrative requirements are complete, and now only the determination is made through the trial.
The failure of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto in world heritage will be determined at a meeting of the 43 world heritage committees.
He added that the meeting of the 43 World Heritage Committees held voting rights or veto rights in 21 countries, but from the 21 countries holding the voting rights, when meeting the proposed countries it was not allowed to participate so that the assessment took place objectively.
"So Indonesia as one of the countries does not have voting rights later when the sites submitted from our country are assessed," he said.
If Sawahlunto is successfully established as a world heritage it will affect tourism, the level of foreign tourist arrivals will be more, and tourism promotion will no longer be only by Sawahlunto and West Sumatra, but also by UNESCO.
