Lubukbasung (ANTARA) - Manager of Waterboom Loebas Wisata, Lubukbasung District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Uzi M Fikri Yasin handed over a protected species of slow loris or Nycticebus coucang to the local Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).

The manager of Water Loebas Wisata, Uzi M Fikri Yasin in Lubukbasung, Wednesday, said that the rare animal was obtained from people living around the tourist sites on Tuesday (8/11).

"I ask the people who find slow lorises to be handed over to the BKSDA, because it is protected by Law No. 5 of 1990," he said.

West Sumatra BKSDA Forest Ecosystem Controller, Ade Putra, said the animal would be observed before being released in the Maninjau forest reserve.

The handover of the slow loris, which is estimated to be four years old and is male, was the second time carried out by the manager of Waterboom Loebas Wisata.

Previously, in April 2020, the Waterboom Loebas Wisata also handed over seven giant brown tortoises (Manouria emys) consisting of four female and three male, weighing about two to 15 kilograms of various sizes.

BKSDA gives its highest appreciation to the managers of Waterboom Loebas Wisata for their concern and attention to the importance of the conservation of protected plants and animals.

"We hope this will become a good example for the general public," he said.

To note, there are five types of Nycticebus in the world, three species of slow loris live in Indonesia, namely, the Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus), the Sumatran slow loris (N. coucang) and the Bornean slow loris (N. menagensis).

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Redlist has categorized the Javan slow loris as endangered and vulnerable for the Sumatran and Bornean slow lorises.

Slow lorises have been included in the CITES appendix 1 category, which means they should not be traded by the Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Meanwhile in Indonesia, slow lorises are protected based on Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Living Natural Resources and their Ecosystems and Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.106 / 2018 which prohibits anyone from capturing, injuring, killing, possessing, storing, maintain, transport and trade protected animals whether alive, dead or their body parts.
