Weaving Industry Center To Increase Regional Economy: Mufidah

Batusangkar, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Wife of Vice President of Indonesia, Mufidah Jusuf Kalla said the center of weaving industry in Tigo Jangko, Tanah Datar District, West Sumatra is expected to become a new economic center so that it will be one of regional growth supporting.

Mufidah in Batusangkar, Tuesday (May 8), ordered to weaving training participants to continue in developing the ability and expertise in weaving to produce a quality songket woven fabric.

Mufidah who is also known as Chairman of National Craft Council (Dekranas) is requesting that existing facilities today can be utilized as possible.

"The craftsmen should continue to improve their skills in weaving so that their work can compete internationally," she remarked.

She explained that the existence of weaving industrial centers in Tanah Datar can also be a magnet for other woven in West Sumatra, such as Pandai Sikek weaving, Sungayang, Silungkang in Sawahlunto and Nareh in Pariaman.

"As the largest center in Indonesia, hopefully it can spur the younger generation to learn weaving and participate to preserve local culture," she added. (cha)
