3,000 durians in Lubukbasung Agam marketed to Riau-Jakarta every day

Lubukbasung (ANTARA) - Around 3,000 durians in Silayang Tinggi, Jorong Enam Parik Panjang, Lubukbasung District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra are marketed to Riau and Jakarta Provinces every day.

Collecting trader Salwin (52) in Lubukbasung said Friday, the durians were sent to Riau and Jakarta using a Mitsubishi Colt L300 and a truck.

"To Riau, it was taken using a Mitsubishi Colt L300 with a load of 1,000 units and Jakarta using a truck with a load of 2,000," he said.

He added that durians are sold to Riau in ripe conditions that fall from the tree.

Especially for shipments to Jakarta, he added, half-ripe durians are picked using human and monkey labor.

The durian will be ripe when it arrived in Jakarta, it took two days and two nights.

"If we bring the ripe durian to Jakarta, it will be not good enough when arrived to the destination," he said.

He added that the durian was purchased from local residents on a per stem system.

After the durian falls, it is directly harvested by two workers and a monkey.

After that, the durians are sorted to separate the good ones and sent immediately.

"Durian Silayang has thick meat and delicious taste," he said.

Community leader of Silayang Tinggi, Yanto said that the area of durian gardens in the area is around 20 hectares and durian bears fruit twice a year.

"At present only about 40 percent of durian gardens bear fruit in Silayang Tinggi," he said.

In the future, he said, the area will be used as agro tourism, because the potential for durian is very much in the area. (*)
