Ministry To Assist Payakumbuh in Developing Rendang Business

Payakumbuh, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The Ministry of Industry will help the government of Payakumbuh, West Sumatra to develop the ability of rendang (beef stewed in coconut milk) business actors to advance the business as one of region leading culinary.

Director of Regional Development II of Ministry of Industry, Busharmaidi in Payakumbuh on Thursday, said the activity aims to cause rendang business actors can fulfillmarket demand on a larger scale and certain technical issues.

"Currently rendang business in Payakumbuh already has its own market, but if there is demand on a large scale and special requirements, the opportunity can not be fulfilled," he explained.

For that, in the future, it needs to collect crafters or rendang business actors in one area and equalize the quality standards of its products.

He cited the current rendang product is still diverse, ranging from the size of meat and the flavor that includes spicy or not, the meat is tender or not and the differences of other spices.

Then, he added also improve the packaging of rendang to be better, interesting, and resistant.

If the rendang business actor is already in one area, the government can help the packaging equipment.

"Some facilities that cost a product are very high, but when they are used together it will be more economical which makes the small industries unable to compete with large industries," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Payakumbuh Mayor Riza Falepi said rendang products are believed to improve the welfare of community if it is cultivated on a larger scale.

Therefore, rendang has a product from upstream to downstream, ranging from coconut and chili farmers, cattle ranchers or buffaloes, leather craftsmen, as well as the traders who market it. (cha)
