Arosuka, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The Center for Agricultural Technology Assessment (BPTP) of West Sumatra stated that the double-edged onion program from seed origin or True Shallot Seed (TSS) can produce 36 to 40 tons per hectare.

Head of West Sumatra BPTP, Chandra Indrawanto is represented by Head of Cooperation for Study Service, Ismon in Arosuka, Tuesday, said that onion harvesting from tubers nationally only produces 10 to 11 tons per hectare and maximum 15 tons.

Through the Multiple Fold Program from seed seedlings is shown as an example to the farmers in the area.

"On this day, we have harvested Proliga onion from TSS seeds," he said.

He mentioned the TSS breeding technique can anticipate the need for tuber bulbs become more efficient, with one hectare can produce about 150 kilograms of seeds.

Besides, with seed program of onion, it can save the cost of producing seeds much cheaper to one-fifth than usual and with yields up to two to three times.

He explained the seeds of original onion seedling is an innovation in seed. So far, the commonly used onion seeds are tubers that have some weaknesses such as large volume, and sometimes encountered quality degradation due to tuber-transmitted diseases.

"Using TSS onion production is expected to be higher because the seeds used have eliminated some tuber-transmitted diseases," he said.

The use of TSS also allows plant spacing to be reduced so that plant populations can be further increased to 800,000 plants per hectare.

Another way to increase plant population is widening the beds or minimizing the distance between beds.

To minimize pest attacks, especially caterpillar used light trap technology that will catch the insects which will produce the caterpillar eggs, he added. (cha)
