Simpang Empat, (Antara Sumbar) - Dozens of Kampung Baru residents, Ranah Batahan sub-district, West Pasaman District, West Sumatra are still displaced after the flash floods hit the area on October 8, 2017.

The flash flood resulted in 17 units of residential houses uninhabitable and had to evacuate to their families, Ranah Batahan sub-district head, Syahwirman stated in Simpang Empat, on Tuesday.

According to him at this time the location of the settlement is very alarming, even the lip of Batang Batahan River is only one meter with a national road that is connecting West Sumatra with North Sumatra.

If there is no quick handling, the road can be broken because of eroded river water, he said.

Related to the disaster-affected communities, they have tried to propose the construction of houses for the victims by using the budget of West Pasaman District.

But these funds are still not enough to build a decent home for community.

We hope there will be provincial funds that can be channeled for the construction of 17 units of the resident house, he added.

Chief Coordinator of the Regional Representative of West Sumatran Regional Representative Council (Dapil IV) of West Sumatra, Amora Lubis, who visited the site, said that his party could propose a house rehabilitation fund of Rp10 million per house.

"We will propose later to the Social Service of West Sumatra for this program. I got a chance to rehabilitate 45 housing units," Amora pointed out.

Related to the normalization of Batang Batahan River, according to him is the authority of North Sumatra Province because the upstream and downstream are in the area.

We will immediately write to the governor of West Sumatra to coordinate with the North Sumatra Provincial Government to urge the normalization of the river, he added. (cha)
