Padang (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Center for Drug and Food Control (BBPOM) in Padang, W Sumatra urges local people to avoid buying cosmetics that offer instantaneous white skin.
"People should be suspicious of cosmetics that make their faces white quickly because it must contain mercury or other dangerous substances," said Director of Traditional Medicines Supervisor and Suplement, BPOM RI Martin Suhendri during the handover of the BBPOM's chief position in Padang on Thursday.
He invited the public to be more careful and do not believe about advertisements offering whitening cosmetic products.
Especially cosmetic products that are purchased online and are not equipped with marketing authorization from BPOM.
He invites the public before buying cosmetic products, they should check BPOM code and the ingredients of products.
According to him cosmetics that contain mercury are very dangerous for health if used for skin or whiten the face.
According to him mercury embedded in the skin can cause cancer and if it enters the bloodstream it can cause kidney leakage.
He admitted that for 2.5 years he served as the Head of BBPOM Padang, illegal cosmetics sales often occurred in W Sumatra.
"We continue to make arrests, raids and legal proceedings. The result is it has begun to decrease until now," he said.
