Money Circulation Among S Pesisir Gambier Farmers Reached Rp237.9 Billion

Painan, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The money circulation among the farmers of gambier (ingredient used in betel chewing, tanning and dyeing) in South Pesisir, West Sumatra is estimated at Rp237.9 billion throughout 2017 if the commodity price averages at Rp35 thousand per kilogram, local government officials said.

"But gambier price once reached Rp135 thousand per kilogram for several weeks in 2017," Head of Plantation, Food and Horticulture Food Plantation of South Pesisir, Andi Masri stated in Painan, Tuesday.

Nevertheless, he said, gambier prices can not be ascertained, at certain times it can drop and at other times it can also increase so highly.

"If gambier price is only Rp20 thousand per kilogram, farmers still get such profit, but throughout 2017, gambier price never experiences that price," he pointed out.

Gambier farmers in the district spread in Sub-districts of Koto XI Tarusan, Bayang, IV Jurai, Batang Kapas, Silk, Lengayang and Tapan.

Meanwhile, the special community in Linggo Sari Baganti Sub-district is now getting interested to try their luck by becoming a gambier farmer.

The total gambir area reaches 14,313 hectares with total production 6,798.6 tons in 2017. (cha)
