Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - West Sumatra Vice Governor Nasrul Abit said the innovative development of "Lubeg Catfish" cultivation in Lubuk Begalung Sub-district, Padang, could be a pilot for other sub-districts in the province to improve people welfare.

"The examples are not absolutely the product development, but the most important is the innovation," he said in Padang on Wednesday.

He said it was related to the innovation of sub-district level government in helping to improve the economy of citizens in West Sumatra.

According to Nasrul, innovation conducted by Lubuk Begalung Head is deserved to be appreciated because the benefits are felt directly by community. In fact, it can inspire other citizens to participate in the development of catfish farming.

Catfish cultivation conducted in Lubuk Begalung using bioflok technology and done in addition to the existing land in local district office as many as four ponds.

Nasrul Abit said the current needs of West Sumatra catfish about three million tons per year and can only be fulfilled 30 percent by local farmers. It means that the prospect of cultivation is still good.

However, it does not mean that all sub-districts in West Sumatra should join the cultivation of catfish. Innovation must be adapted to the conditions and potential of the area so that the benefits actually enjoyed by community, he added. (cha)
