South Pesisir Corn Production Exceeds The Target

Painan, (Antara Sumbar) - Corn production in South Pesisir District, West Sumatra until November 2017 reached 141,835 tons which has exceeded the targeted 11,935 tons.

Head of Department of Agriculture, Horticulture and local plantation, Jumsu Trisno in Painan, Tuesday, said the production reached with a harvest area of 18,301 hectares.

The highest production is in Air Pura Sub-district of 44,663 tons with 5,763 hectares of harvested area.

Followed by Pancung with production of 21,460 tons and total harvest of 2,769 hectares. It seeks to increase the number and quality of corn production.

Efforts made include providing counseling to the farmers about planting corn, providing tools and agricultural machinery, irrigation and other improvements that can support and facilitate the production process.

In addition, it also sought to revive unproductive land for planting corn. If the land is not worth the planting rice then it will lead the farmers to plant corn.

"With the expansion of planting area, of course production will increase," he said.

While for production in 2016 to December, the realization of production reached 158,160 tons with a harvested area of 19,846 hectares.

South Pesisir is one of the corn production centers in West Sumatra after West Pasaman and followed by Agam District. (cha)
