Pulau Punjung, (Antara Sumbar) - The Government of Dharmasraya District, West Sumatra provided training for 30 small and medium entrepreneurs (UKM) in designing production packaging to improve competitiveness in local and regional markets.

Head of the local Department of Cooperatives, UKM and Trade, Zubrizal in Pulau Punjung, said that the skills and abilities in designing for small and medium enterprises are important to be honed to make attractive products.

The training in cooperation with the Directorate General of Small and Medium Industries of Ministry of Industry of Indonesia Republic which take place at the Aula Hotel Al Jannah Sungai Dareh for two days, October 3 to 4, 2017.

"The activity is expected to encourage SMEs in Dharmasraya able to compete in the market," he said.

Packaging design becomes one of product produced by UKM actors especially for food industry in addition to the taste and regional characteristics.

According to him, many UKM actors have not understood the importance of standard packaging products which is more attractive. Moreover, it can maintain product quality. As a result, the products produced by these SMEs have no competitiveness.

"The packaging of SME products, such as food, beverages, and cakes, are far from attractive, the design is sober. Most of them are wrapped in plastic without any brand." The problem is that they are not well informed," he explained.

In fact, most consumers actually see the packaging at the beginning before taste the product. Packaging design is a communication medium to promote the product itself.

"Initial packaging attracts people to be interested in the product. People does not just look at the content, packaging is also the main function of marketing, as a media campaign, in addition to maintaining the quality of products to stay durable," he added. (cha)
