Pekanbaru (ANTARA) - The Sumatran tiger from Riau Province, named Inung Rio died while being treated at the Sumatran Tiger Rehabilitation Center in Dharmasraya (PR-HSD), W Sumatra on April 15, 2019.

The Arsari Djojohadikusumo Foundation as the manager of PR-HSD revealed that Inung died due to complications of the disease suffered by the protected animal.

"Inung Rio died due to complications from various congenital diseases before being rehabilitated in PR-HSD," said Executive Director of the Arsari Djojohadikusumo Foundation, Catrini Pratihari Kubontubuh when contacted by Antara from Pekanbaru on Wednesday.

The Sumatran tiger (panthera tigris sumatrae) was previously entangled in the Riau ecosystem restoration area (RER) managed by PT Gemilang Cipta Nusantara (GCN) in Sangar Village, Teluk Meranti District, Pelalawan Regency, Riau in March 2019. The male tiger, estimated to be 3 to 4 years old, was seriously injured in the left front leg due to a steel sling snare.

For the further handling process, the tiger named Inung Rio was entrusted by the Riau Center for Natural Resources Conservation to PR-HSD, but the age of the striped animal only lasted 20 days due to complications from the disease.

Catrini said the team of veterinarians immediately carried out carcass or necropsy surgery on April 16, 2019, the day after Inung's death. The initial diagnosis results have also been submitted to W Sumatra BBKSDA on April 18, 2019.

In the letter it was explained that the diagnosis while Inung Rio died from pneumonia, nerve function disorders, failure of blood circulation and distemper which was characterized by the formation of exudates and severe inflammation of the lung organs. Then also to bleeding in the lining of the brain, damaging blood vessels in the cerebrum and damage to the great tissue in the liver, spleen and heart.

He said his office had also carried out laboratory checks for more detailed diagnostic results. According to him, the lab results came out on June 12, 2019 and the results were immediately reported on June 13, 2019 to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The letter was also sent to the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Director of Conservation and Biodiversity of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Head of Riau BBKSDA and Head of W Sumatra BBKSDA. However, he said his party felt it was not authorized to deliver the results of the diagnosis permanently because the KLHK promised to issue a press statement on this matter.

"Sorry, we submit the data attachment directly to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to make it one door," he said.

Based on Antara's news record, the last time Riau's BBKSDA delivered the condition of Inung Rio on April 12, 2019. The head of the Riau BBKSDA, Suharyono, when he conveyed the process of healing Inung Rio's snare wound showed good progress, it appeared the wound began to close with a shallow wound depth. He also said the tiger was sick due to a systemic infection caused by open sores on the left leg, and infection of the hepatic organ or liver.
