Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - The West Sumatra government is targeting the production of red chili in the province in 2017 by 82,392 tons or 18,990 tons more than 2016 production.

"To reach the target, the area needs 10,095 hectares of land to plant chili," Head of Food Crops, Horticulture and Sumatran Plantation, Candra stated in Padang, Monday (Sept 25).

The largest production target of chili is located in Solok District which is 22,622 tons, Agam 29,956 tons, Tanah Datar 13,561 tons.

Limapuluh Kota 5,994 tons, South Solok 5,375 tons, South Pesisir 5,347 tons, West Pasaman 2,316 tons and Padang Panjang 1,936 tons.

To achieve the target and smoothen the production process, it provides assistance in the form of water storage tanks, tools, agricultural machinery, irrigation improvements and so on.

Then do the socialization and guidance to the farmers, especially in terms of chili planting patterns, such as setting the growing season to get maximum results.

Then the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation immediately work with third parties in distribution of red peppers now.

"It has been discussed with 500 memebers of private sector who are ready to accommodate the chili from central region and for the welfare of chili farmers," he stated.

The need of red chili consumption in West Sumatra is 30,000 tons per year.

With a population of approximately five million people, it needs six kilograms per capita per year.

Previously, the Governor of West Sumatra, Irwan Prayitno asked the regents and mayors to pioneer the development of chili in the yard of a community home as one solution to overcome the scarcity of stock in order to suppress inflation rate.

"I ask the head of region to help seeds preparation, distribute 10 to 20 sticks to be planted in the yard of community," he said. (cha)
