Padang City receives award for the best cooperative performance

Padang (ANTARA) - The provincial government of W Sumatra has awarded Padang City as the city with the best cooperative performance in 2020.

"This award will be a motivation to improve cooperatives and MSMEs in the city of Padang in the future," said Padang Mayor, Mahyeldi in Padang, on Wednesday, after receiving the award handed by the Governor of W Sumatra, Irwan Prayitno.

On behalf of the Padang City Government and the people of Padang City, Mahyeldi was grateful and thanked the West Sumatra Provincial Government for the award.

According to him, cooperatives can become an economic pillar as well as a place to build a business together in realizing a more prosperous people's economy.

"For the development of MSMEs, it must indeed work together with cooperatives to realize economic independence and individual members of the cooperative itself," he said.

While the Governor of W Sumatra, Irwan Prayitno said that there are a number of initiatives being carried out to strengthen and modernize cooperatives in Indonesia.

Firstly, improve the ecosystem of business ease that enables cooperatives to access a wider market, finance and develop business capacity to the fullest.

"Cooperatives must enter the national flagship economic sector such as maritime, tourism and the manufacturing industry as well as the creative economy sector where young people are heavily involved in the sector," he said.

Furthermore, the second one, said Irwan, currently the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs is developing a national strategy for MSMEs and cooperatives that will facilitate the collaborative work of all policy makers.

Economic turbulence during the COVID-19 pandemic provides a valuable lesson that financial sector cooperatives or savings and loans are vulnerable and easily contracted by the escalation.

"Therefore it is necessary to prepare a system of supervisors and guarantor of deposits in cooperatives so that they can provide a sense of safe for those who place deposits or invest in cooperatives," he said.
