Sawahlunto, (Antara Sumbar) - West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno appreciates eight districts and municipalities that can maintain rice and corn production above five percent to help the archieving of food self-sufficiency targets.
"Rice production achievement which is above five percent becomes one of the efforts to achieve self-sufficiency. We appreciate it," he said in Sawahlunto, Friday (Sept 29).
He mentioned that after opening World Food Day (HPS) XXXVII anniversary of West Sumatra Province 2017 in Sawahlunto.
In addition to the appreciation, he also submitted the Award of Adhi Karya Pangan Nusantara of Provincial level of 2017 to eight regions.
The recipients of each award for rice production are Agam District, Solok, Solok Municipality, Padang Panjang and Payakumbuh.
As for corn production are Sijunjung District, Dharmasraya, Padang Pariaman and Solok.
Irwan expected the production level can be maintained or even increased until the end of the year because the target of center government for West Sumatra in 2017 is three million tons.
Head of West Sumatra Food, Effendi said the award given is one effort to encourage districts to increase rice and corn production.
"Food self-sufficiency is important to maintain local food security," he added.
Meanwhile, Head of Food Crops Office of Holticulture and Plantation of West Sumatra, Chandra said to achieve the target of self-sufficiency established by the center, the regions need irrigation improvements in the area.
"Good irrigation will ensure good and sustainable production," he added. (cha)
