Padang (ANTARA) - A number of residents are scrambling to buy garlic at a low price of only Rp32,000 per kilogram at the Trade Service Market Operations which was held at Pasar Raya Padang, West Sumatra.

"The price is cheap just Rp 32,000 per kilogram, I plan to take one sack but it can't," said one resident of Padang, ZulKarni at Pasar Raya Padang on Monday.

He acknowledged that the garlic that was bought was for sale again at a shop near his home.

"Since there is news about Corona Virus, until now the price of imported garlic to more expensive in the market reaching Rp. 60,000 per kilogram," he said.

Head of Price Supervision and Stabilization Division of Padang City Trade Office Heni Puspita said the garlic came from the West Sumatra Food Service.

"This garlic has been stocked for a long time,  before the Corona virus occurs," he said.

The purpose of this cheap garlic market operation is to stabilize the market price. Besides that, it provides a relatively cheap price to the community.

"This activity was held in all districts in Padang City, City Hall, Indonesian Farmers Shop Center (TTIC), and today it was held at Pasar Raya Padang," he said.

The activity was held for four days, from 17 to 20 February 2020.

"The stock of garlic which will be sold cheaply to the public is around 23 tons for the W Sumatra region and specifically in Padang city gets 5 tons," he said.

He hopes that through these activities the price of garlic in W Sumatra, especially at Pasar Raya Padang, will go down again, which today is still high at around Rp54,000 per kilogram at the trader level.
