Padang (ANTARA) - The Environmental Agency of Padang City, West Sumatra will add modular floating installations because it is considered effective in collecting waste that entered the sea.

"After installing a modular floating under the flood canal of the Rasuna Said bridge, Padang, it is indeed effective in collecting waste," said the Head of Environment Agency of Padang Mairizon, in Padang, Friday.

He said that in three days, the modular floating could hold as much as nine cubic meters of waste or a full truck which was immediately delivered to the laystall. Even under normal conditions it is very effective in collecting waste from rivers.

He plans to add another modular floating in 2021.

"Due to budget constraints, we cannot order in large quantities," he said.

He further stated that the price of the modular floating could reach Rp.495 million depending on the length of the modular floating itself.

"The price of the modular floating that we installed earlier was around Rp.490 million with a length of about 50 meters," he said.

But the good news is a few days ago he received news from the head of the Padang Selatan sub-district that there would be assistance for installing a modular floating in the Batang Harau area.

Furthermore, according to him, the concept of installing modular floating is not only in the downstream side of the river, but must be made in the form of segments.

He said that previously there was damage to the modular floating because when it rained heavily the modular floating was still installed. The modular floating should have been opened because it was unable to hold the flow of large river water.

He appealed to the public to play an active role in managing waste and not littering in any place, including into rivers.

"We have provided a waste management agency (LPS) in every sub-district. So the community is asked to participate in joining so as not to throw waste anywhere, especially in rivers," he said.
