Consumer Tendency Index in West Sumatra Goes Down

Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of West Sumatra recorded the index of consumer tendency in the area in the third quarter 2017 reached 102.76 or down compared to the previous quarter which reached 109.67.

"It means that the economic condition of consumers in West Sumatra is down and less optimistic than the previous quarter," Head of Balance Sheet, Region and BPP of West Sumatra Hefinanur stated in Padang, Tuesday.

He explained the consumer tendency index is an indicator of the latest economic developments produced by BPS through a survey of consumer tendencies that describe the condition of consumer economics in current quarter.

He further said it in conducting the survey conducted inter-quarterly panel to obtain a more accurate picture of changes in consumer perceptions over time.

The survey was conducted in Agam District, Padang City, Solok City and Bukittinggi City with a sample of 28 Bbok census, he said.

He conveyed the decline in the consumer tendency index due to two forming variables that influence inflation to total household expenditure and variable volume or frequency of household consumption.

While in the fourth quarter of 2017 BPS of West Sumatra estimates West Sumatra Consumer Tendency Index to reach 97.03 which means the economic condition is still experiencing a decline and optimistic levels of consumers which is also expected to decline compared to third quarter 2017.

He said the consumer tendency index for the third quarter was below the national index at 109.42, which ranks ninth among all provinces in Sumatra.

On the other side, West Sumatra BPS recorded economic growth in West Sumatra in the third quarter of 2017 reached 5.38 percent and is the second highest in Sumatra after South Sumatra.

"In terms of West Sumatra's economic production, the third quarter is driven by an 8.49 percent growth in education business field and from expenditure side due to significant export growth of 113.09 percent," he said.

He explained that in the third quarter of 2017, the economic structure of West Sumatra according to business field that was dominated by three main categories, namely forestry and fishery agriculture 23.61 percent, large trade, retail and car repairs, motorcycles 14.94 percent and transportation and warehousing 12.88 percent.

While in terms of expenditure of economic growth in West Sumatera, besides being driven by the export of palm oil is also triggered by household consumption expenditure and government consumption expenditure components. (cha)
