Padang (ANTARA) - Silungkang Village in Sawahlunto City, West Sumatra, has been nominated for the 2020 Indonesian Tourism Award (API) Most Popular Shopping Destination award.
"This village has always been synonymous with songket weaving. It's not wrong to be nominated for the 2020 API's Most Popular Shopping Destination," said Head of the West Sumatra Tourism Office, Novrial in Padang, Sunday.
He said that in these shopping destinations, tourists can find various types and motifs of weaving crafts that are very attractive.
In addition, tourists can also witness the technique of making songket using traditional wooden weaving equipment or take a selfie with the background of a weaving tool which is becoming scarce.
To support the preservation of weaving and songket, the Sawahlunto City Government annually holds the Sawahlunto International Songket Carnival (SiSCa). However, in 2020 it cannot be held because of the pandemic situation.
In 2015, the SiSCa event broke the MURI record for the category of the highest number of songket users, reaching 17,290 people.
He hopes that the support of the people of West Sumatra can help Silungkang Village become the Most Popular Shopping Destination in API 2020.
