"Silver-man" Commonly Spotted at Padang, West Sumatera

Padang (ANTARA) - Silver-man” starting to appear in several traffic light areas in Padang, West Sumatera. This situation quite disturbing to citizens around who think that their presence makes surrounding conditions less conductive.

“The “silver-man” phenomenon growing since their first appearance at Imam Bonjol traffic light but it has spread now to various intersection locations such as ByPass, Khatib Sulaiman, Plaza Andalas, and many more.” Said Ilham, the silver-man in Plaza Andalas traffic light crossing, Tuesday (6/7).

Silver-men are young children who covered their body from face to feet with metallic silver paint mixed with cooking oil to resemble statues to get people attention in traffic light in order to collect donations from them.

“At first I was a street singer, but the money I got was not good enough for me, so I tried to painted my body with silver metallic paint and become a Silver-man, and it earns me more money.” Said Ilham, a young boy who does not continue his study in school just like the most of those Silver-man.

They interest doing this job after seeing a viral video about the existence of Silver-Man in Jakarta in earning a living and they think they can do the same in Padang.

The popularity of Silver-man raises pros and cons in society. “It will be better if they got disciplined by the authorities,” said Azis, a shop employee around Plaza Andalas.

The Public Order Security Agency had raided this silver-man previously as an effort by the government in controlling their existence in Padang and have them a guidance and direction for their common good.
