Region readiness needed to prevent stunting during COVID-19 pandemic

Padang (ANTARA) - Governor of W Sumatra, Irwan Prayitno as Keynote Speaker in Webinar was held by Habibie Institute for Public Policy and Governance (HIPPG) Indonesia University (UI), with theme about the region readiness to prevent stunting during COVID-19 pandemic, in Governor's house, Thursday (7/9).

The W Sumatra Governor, Irwan Prayitno said the readiness of region to prevent stunting during the COVID-19 pandemic needed to do nutrition services and prioritize the COVID-19 prevention principles with keep to wash hand, wear mask, keep a distance, make a group via online for counseling and education nutrition, and do the Integrated Health Post services.

Nutrition counseling for pregnant women and children, giving additional food such as vitamin A, blood booster tablets for pregnant women and teenagers, make a visit to home. That things need to do in preventing and countermeasures stunting in W Sumatra.

Irwan said that stunting was conditions of failure to grow in children under five as a result of chronic malnutrition so that children are shorter for age. Malnutrition occurs since the baby is in the womb and in early life after birth and appears after the child is two years old.

"Therefore, it is necessary to improve parenting, eating patterns and improving sanitation, these three components need to be dealt quickly, it will be recorded the data in the field, the regions, and village under the mayor's regency leadership, and the provincial government will also play a role in this matter," he said.

Irwan said, the problem of stunting was a governance in handling it, so that we needed a same vision. With this webinar in order to have the same vision in dealing stunting so that the value of the stunting number in 2024 will drop to 14 percent so that all will move quickly and innovatively to save the people from the COVID-19 pandemic era.

The Governor of W Sumatra also said the Direct factors affecting the nutritional status of toddlers were food consumption factors and the second infectious disease affecting each other.

The quality of the environment, and mainly, the availability of clean water sanitation facilities and healthy living behaviors such as washing hands with soap, defecating in the toilet, not smoking and air circulation in the house.

"And other factors that influence direct and indirect factors are the political situation, the economy and existing resources include environmental resources, climate change and finally the poverty is the problem root of malnutrition," he said.

In addition, Governor Irwan Prayitno also said that the main service for nutrition problems was carried out by the Integrated Health Post because it was the spearhead to detect if there are problems about growth and development of toddler to be handle immediately.
