Padang, W Java, July 21 (Antara) - An earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, shook West Sumatra's Provincial Capital of Padang at 2.58 p.m. on Saturday.

         Padang Panjang Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (MBKG) stated that the epicenter of the quake was located 0.97 degrees southern latitude and 100.70 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers.

         The earthquake, which was located in Solok or about 19 kilometers southeast of Padang, did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

         Residents rushed out of homes as they felt relatively strong tremors. Guests in Padang hotels too reportedly fled their rooms.
