Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale jolts the Mentawai Islands District, West Sumatra, at 04.05 p.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers on Monday (Oct 9).

"The quake is centered at 6.96 degrees south latitude, 96.11 east longitude and it has not a potential of tsunami," Head of Geophysics Climatology Meteorology (BMKG) Padang Panjang Rahmat Triyono stated while being confirmed from Padang on Monday.

The quake was located at 670 kilometers southwest of the Mentawai Islands, but in general the earthquake was not felt in the city of Padang and surrounding areas because the epicenter is quite far away.

According to him, the earthquake is similar to earthquake that occurred on March 2, 2016 which has the potential of tsunami and felt by almost the entire community of West Sumatra.

But the difference, this time the strength of the earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami, he said.

"And the quake is not on the megathrust line," he continued.

While one of residents of Padang, Yulia Gustina (25) said she did not feel any vibration during the earthquake.

"I see there is earthquake information in BMKG application, while I am teaching students in the tutoring of Jati, Padang, but we do not feel the vibration," she said. (cha)
