Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysical Station Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, recorded 236 tectonic earthquakes occurred in the province throughout 2017.

Head of BMKG Geophysics Station Padang Panjang, Rahmat Triyono contacted from Padang, Wednesday (Dec 6) mentions of 236 earthquake, 22 of them occurred with magnitude above five Richter scale, both sourced from land and at sea and felt as many as seven times by the community.

Then there was one powerful earthquake that occurred on August 31, 2017 at 68 kilometers of east of Saibi Estuary of Mentawai archipelago with a strength of 6.2 on the Richter scale.

"6.2 Richter scale earthquake was felt to the city of Payakumbuh and Muko-muko Bengkulu," he said.

This is because West Sumatra is located between two large tectonic plates of Eurasia and Indo-Australia as well as the fault of Sumatran fault so that the intensity of earthquake is quite high.

"Related to the caused, the Sianok segment caused more earthquakes," he said.

The Sianok Segment is located around the Sianok Canyon of Bukittinggi Municipality to the southeast of Singkarak Lake, past the eastern side of the lake.

Grace appeals when an earthquake with a strong shock, people should not panic so they can save themselves well.

Earlier Earthquake Experts from University of Andalas (Unand) Dr Badrul Mustafa said West Sumatra in general are not included in the area that is aware of the earthquake because in some districts / cities there are buildings that can not stand the disaster.

"I want local government to encourage prone areas to improve both physical and non-physical preparedness to face the disaster," he added. (cha)
