Jakarta (ANTARA) - Pencak Silat Tradition of Indonesia, which has recently been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an intangible cultural heritage, is not limited to martial arts, so it is different from Silat in Malaysia.

According to the Director of socio-cultural and international organization of the State Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kama Pradipta, Pencak Silat which contains tradition values of cultural heritage of Indonesian ancestors, also covers the mental and spiritual aspects.

Traditions originating from Java and W Sumatra also have artistic aspects through traditional music and musical instruments, as well as traditional weapons used.

"The tradition of Pencak Silat Indonesia teaches the balance between the relationship between God, people and nature," said Kama in a media meeting in Jakarta, Monday.

In addition, Pencak Silat tradition also emphasizes the positive martial arts, not offensive, and maintain the balance of social governance as well as a part of traditional ceremonial rituals.

While Silat Malaysia, also recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of the World's 14th Council of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee in Bogota, Colombia, last December 12, only emphasized on aspects of the martial arts following the sports movements .

"From the aspects of its inheritance, Malaysia has listed that Silat is a cultural heritage of Malay Peninsula, such as 'Silat Harimau'," Kama said.

Before filing for UNESCO, Indonesia has invited Malaysia to apply for Silat as an intangible heritage together, such as when the two proposed Pantun to UNESCO. However, due to differences in views, the two countries eventually submit themselves.

Pencak Silat adds a total of 10 intangible cultural heritages owned by Indonesia after Wayang, Batik, Batik training, Angklung, Saman dance, Noken, three genres of Balinese dance tradition and Pinisi ship. Going forward, Indonesia will continue to propose all forms of cultural heritage to UNESCO.
