Payakumbuh To Make Rendang as City Icon

Payakumbuh, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The Government of Payakumbuh Municipality, West Sumatra, plans to make rendang (beef simmered in coconut milk and spices) as city icon because Minang typical culinary is well known and typical rendang of Payakumbuh has a distinctive taste.

"Rendang can be a product that has a strong competitiveness for Payakumbuh to enter international level," Payakumbuh Mayor, Riza Falepi stated in Payakumbuh on Thursday.

According to him, in order to be able to go forward, an area needs to have its own icon and brand that have competitiveness at national and international level.

"For example Japan is associated with Toyota, Germany with Mercedes, America with Apple and Italy with Hugo Boss and Prada. If the current Indonesia association abroad is Indomie, we change it with rendang. So if Indonesia talks, people remember rendang especially in Payakumbuh," he explained.

He conveyed to realize that desire, Payakumbuh government poured the budget to build Rendang Centers.

With the establishment of rendang centers so that rendang entrepreneurs can gather there and the quality of products can be maintained, he remarked.

"Rendang Payakumbuh must go internasinal, if we can enlarge the production and expand the marketing, not a few income that can be obtained by the entrepreneurs. If a rendang can be valued Rp5,000, imagine if the production can reach ten million cans," he pointed out.

The mayor is optimistic that rendang can be like a Swiss nestle milk product whose net profit reaches the equivalent of Rp700 trillion per year and contributes to the state tax of Rp300 trillion.

He said that now it has been built rendang canning factory, and soon it will build rendang center, its market share is quite wide, ie pilgrims and umrah around the world, so the dream of having Rp1 trillion of regional income is not grandiose.

Therefore he asked the seriousness and support of all parties, especially the rendang entrepreneurs in Payakumbuh to realize the big dream. (cha)
