Tourism Actors To Involve in Disaster Risk Reduction: Mentawai Official

Mentawai, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The Government of Mentawai Islands District, West Sumatra appealed tourism business actors in the area to be involved in disaster risk reduction activities.

As a disaster prone area and efforts towards resilience Mentawai face disaster, local government already issued Circular Letter (SE) of Regent that it should be a concern for all tourism actors in Mentawai, Chief Executive of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Mentawai District , Nurdin stated in Tuapejat, Friday.

He explained that one of the important points in the circular is the involvement of tourism business actors to develop contingency plans or to simulate post and field simulation in the scope of business area.

In addition, tourism business actors are encouraged to build shelters with their needs, including the evacuation route to a higher place equipped with signs.

"Understanding of disaster mitigation is an important thing that must be provided for workers and visitors at the tourism sites," he remarked.

The circular letter of the regent, he said, refers to the Law number 24 year 2007 article 28 and 29 on disaster management which implies the involvement of business entities in implementation of disaster management.

Nurdin further said, in the SE, business actors are required to install display meteorological information and geophysical climatology at each facility owned.

"At least it has become the initial information about natural conditions for visitors and workers there," he stated.

He said that in disaster risk reduction, cross-sectoral cooperation is needed, including the awareness of community.

Meanwhile, Head of Tourism, Youth and Sports of Mentawai, Desti Seminora said the SE will be followed up to all business actors in the area.

"We will conduct socialization with related agency to realize the SE," he added. (cha)
