Mentawai, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Regent of Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, Judas Sabaggalet said Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of tourism to be built in that area will contribute to strengthen the indigenous cultural identity of local community.
"SEZ development will not eliminate the original culture of Mentawai, it will strengthen the culture so that it will not disappear and be able to keep up with the times," he said in Tuapejat on Monday.
He noted Bali as an example where the culture of region is increasingly famous and continues to be a means of tourism promotion that provides economic impact for the community.
Furthermore, he explained the original culture of Mentawai has progressed without running away from its identity and become an important part of promotion from Mentawai region.
"Another example related to a bead necklace which can be used by Sikerei and certain people only, now the goods become souvenirs and the form of Mentawai community communication awards to guests who come," he explained.
With regard to the development of SEZ tourism, culture will be an important factor and play a role, so it is not influenced by foreign culture.
Besides, there are many things that must be done to maintain the cultural values so that it is more valuable and survive, he remarked.
Meanwhile, Head of Tourism, Youth and Sports of Mentawai, Desti Seminora said in the construction of the SEZ, it will conduct intensive control with the investors.
"We will ensure that all SEZ development will have a positive impact on the community," he said.
SEZ tourism in Mentawai will be built on Siberut Island with an area of 2,600 hectares, and the investment cost Rp11 trillion. (cha)
