W Sumatra tightened border guard ahead of Eid Al-Fitr

Padang (ANTARA) - Guarding on the border of W Sumatra will be tightened ahead of Eid Al-Fitr 1441 Hijri because the area is still in the implementation of Large Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) until 29 May 2020.

"The government's decision still prohibits going home. Therefore, there will be no violation on guarding even though it is approaching Eid Al-Fitr," W Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno said in Padang on Monday.

He said the prohibition of going home and tightening borders was also a conclusion in a virtual meeting between W Sumatra Government Communications Forum (Forkopimda) with central government.

According to him, permit the drivers to enter and exit in W Sumatra can increase the case of the spread of COVID-19 in the area. Even though now he claims several cluster of virus spreading in that area have started down.

"We must maintain that there are no new clusters, so we can focus on handling the identified clusters. Therefore, the movement of the community is indeed temporarily restricted," he said.

Drivers who attempt to enter the province will be stopped by officers at the border and told to turn back in the original direction.

Regarding people entering W Sumatra through the air route, Irwan believes that they are carrying out their duties or relating to efforts to handle COVID-19.

"Because there are indeed some exceptions according to Permenhub 25/2020," he said.

At present, from a number of COVID-19 distribution clusters in W Sumatra, Pasar Raya Padang cluster is recorded to be increasing significantly. However, several clusters in other areas such as Pesisir Selatan, Pasaman Barat, Pariaman have started to slope.

However, the W Sumatra Provincial Government is still wary because of the predictions of Unand academics, W Sumatra has not yet reached the peak deployment period expected in the last week of May 2020.
