W Sumatra Targets 92,730 Tons Onion Production in 2018

Padang, (Antaranews Sumbar) - West Sumatra Government targets to produce 92,730 tons onion production on 8,430 hectares of land in 2018, Head of Food Crops and Horticulture Sector of Provincial Food, Horticulture and Plantation Agency, Maswal Noor stated.

"The production is targeted by the Ministry of Agriculture, but we are working on onion production to exceed the target," he said in Padang, Thursday.

To achieve the target and increase the production of shallots, the institute provides seed assistance and trains human resources.

"We motivate farmers through the race and awarding," he remarked.

Meanwhile, the production realization in 2017 reached 95,409 tons with the central area of Solok District which capable of producing about 82,677 tons per year. Then it also realizes in Agam, South Solok, Tanah Datar, and Limapuluh Kota.

Related to market onion to other provinces, he said some time ago the Governor of West Sumatra is already doing cooperation with Governor of Riau Islands in the food sector.

"In the future, it will be a follow up for us to distribute the onion to neighboring provinces," he added. (cha)
