Rendang To Be Main Export Commodity: Governor

Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno said rendang (beef simmered in coconut and spices) which is a typical food of the province would be a main export commodity because the interest of foreign culinary lovers is quite high, especially Europe.

"This idea arises because input from a number of partners abroad who want rendang, but quite difficult to obtain," he said in Padang, Friday.

He said it was responding to province's economic growth of 5.1 to 5.5 percent or strengthened after slipping since 2013.

According to him at this time the provincial government is doing culinary study of rendang that lasted up to 1.5 years. A long period of expiration is needed to reach the world market.

Foreign importers, he said, have expressed interest to provincial government so that rendang exports become one of the main focus to reach overseas market.

"I have done several explorations to get investors in the world of exports, one of them rendang," he said.

He conveyed the prestige of rendang is getting a place people abroad's heart after being crowned as the world's finest culinary preparations.

Besides, for the level of the country, he added rendang distribution has been smooth and heavily done.

Rendang cooked directly at the restaurant and the center of the souvenir of Minang, he said now began ogled by tourists who visit West Sumatra.

"Packaging of rendang now has a good start so it can be a hand for tourists," he added. (cha)
