Padang (ANTARA) - The Padang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reminded local residents to be aware of the impact of extreme weather that occurred until March 2020, potentially causing floods to landslides.

"Based on information from Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) up to March 2020 there is potential for extreme weather, the public is asked to be more vigilant and make anticipations," said Head of BPBD Padang, Barlius in Padang, Wednesday.

According to him the impact of extreme weather caused the most obvious hydrometerological disaster in Padang was a fallen tree.

"Therefore the community must be vigilant, for example, when parking a vehicle, do not closed to a tree that has the potential to fall, because it can hit the vehicle," he said.

For flood-prone areas in Padang, namely Jundul Rawang, Padang Selatan Subdistrict, Tabing Banda Gadang Village, Nanggalo District,Kampung  Jua and Arai Pinang, Lubuk Begalung Subdistrict and Dadok Tunggul Hitam, Koto Tangah Subdistrict.

He mentioned during 2019 fallen trees cleared by BPBD Padang reached 698 trunks and the most occurred in November were 81 trees.

He made sure the BPBD Padang fast reaction team was ready to go down 24 hours to overcome the disaster.

In order to increase disaster preparedness, BPBD Padang visited 102 schools and was designated as disaster smart schools which in 2020 added 75 more schools.

This disaster smart school has been given counseling on how to mitigate and anticipate in the event of a disaster, he said.

In addition, the Padang BPBD has also initiated the disaster smart families, whose number currently reaches 14,250 and this year it is targeted to be 25 thousand houses.

He explained the criteria for disaster smart families ranging from earthquake-friendly housing buildings, having disaster prepared bags, layout of furniture that facilitates evacuation during disasters, having evacuation routes that are easily traversed and a gathering place if a disaster occur.

"For disaster prepared bags containing clothes, toiletries that can be used during evacuation if a disaster occur," he said.
