Padang Panjang, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The Government of Padang Panjang Municipality, West Sumatra is targeting 768 tons fish production among others, tilapia, catfish, carp and mas for consumption needs in 2018, Head of Fisheries and Implementation Officer, Indra stated in Padang Panjang, Monday.
"The fish production was 684,84 tons in the previous year. Then, every year there is always an increase of target from the previous realization," he noted.
In the field of fisheries, he explained that the area has potential in freshwater fish hatchery because the required land is not widespread through Padang Panjang Fish Seed Hall and the community hatchery group.
During 2017, Seed Center is able to produce 449,691 fish seeds, 80 percent of them are tilapia and 54,690 are produced by community hatchery group.
He explained tilapia is more dominant because other types of fish such as catfish is more suitable to be in areas with hot temperatures, while Padang Panjang has cold temperature.
Meanwhile, fish consumption by local community in 2017 is 31 kilograms per capita per year or below fish consumption at provincial level of 38 kilograms per capita per year.
To increase consumption of fish, it prepares to socialize the benefits of eating fish for 200 students kindergarten and early childhood in 2018, he added. (cha)
