Lubukbasung (ANTARA) - About 10 tons of fish in floating net cage, nile tilapia species at Lake  Maninjau, Tanjungraya Subdistrict, Agam Regency, W Sumatra have died due to strong winds that have hit the area since Thursdayn, Feb 20.

The head of Agam's Fisheries and Food Security Service, Ermanto in Lubukbasung, said on Thursday that the fish that died in harvest conditions were in Muaro Pauh, Jorong Batuang Panjang, Nagari Sungai Batang, Tanjungraya Subdistrict.

"This fish has died since Tue, Feb 25 after strong winds hit the area on Thur, Feb 20," he said.

He said, the fish came from dozens of floating net cages owned by 12 farmers.

"Farmers suffered a loss of around Rp260 million due to the incident, because the price of fish at the farm level was Rp26 thousand per kilogram," he said.

He said, floating net cage farmers dumped fish carcasses into the lake.

Under these conditions, river water becomes polluted and produces unpleasant odors.

"We have urged farmers to collect fish carcasses and bury so that water is not polluted," he said.

He acknowledged the death of this fish is the third time during January to February 2020.

For this reason, he urges farmers to harvest fish that are ready to harvest and do not sow fish seeds to prevent mass death.

"Because strong winds still have the potential to hit the area," he said.
