Breakwaters are built to overcome abrasion in Pesisir Selatan: Nasrul Abit

Padang (ANTARA) - The provincial government of W Sumatra tried to overcome abrasion in Pesisir Selatan area by built rock breakwater on coastal of the beach

"The budget has been prepared for this year and the construction is almost completed," said Deputy Gevernor of W Sumatra, Nasrul Abit in Padang, on Thursday, after reviewed Muara Air Haji region in Linggo Sari Baganti Subdistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency.

"Abrasion indeed become one of the threat for the community on coastal of the beach. If it is not prevent, it will not only (threaten) the land, but also the community settlement will be threatened by the waves," he added.

Deputy Governor said that according to the community, abrasion occurred since 2008 in Pesisir Selatan.

"Now around 70 houses have been badly damaged and cannot be occupied anymore because of the waves and abrasion hit," he said.

According to him, abrasion has also caused hundreds of hectares of rice fields and land damaged by waves and some can no longer be planted due to sea water.

He hopes the levees and breakwaters can help to prevent residents living on Muara Air Haji Beach from the effects of abrasion.

The Head of the W Sumatra Water Resources Management Office, Rifda Suriani, said the installation of levees and breakwaters to withstand sea waves and coastal abrasion which caused anxiety for the residents of Muara Air Haji.

"This year the construction of grib stones and levees to overcome coastal abrasion is available with a budget of around Rp1.8 billion more," he said.
