Padang (ANTARA) - Governor of W Sumatra Irwan Prayitno reminded residents not to travel during the pandemic so as not to be infected with COVID-19.

"We are still in the effort to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Don't travel because it can add a new cluster of spreading viruses," he said in Padang on Monday.

He said it was related to the habit of residents who flocked to visit attractions with family on Eid holidays.

The application of Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) is considered quite effective in suppressing the number of migrants returning to their villages due to restrictions on the movement of public transportation and the closing of border gates.

Phase I PSBB was applied on April 22 to May 5, 2020, then extended to phase II to May 29, 2020. During PSBB period, there were thousands of vehicles that were refused enter W Sumatra and were forced to turn around.

However, Before the implementation of the PSBB, the W Sumatra Provincial Government recorded at least 120 thousand people who had already returned home. Therefore, there will still be a possibility that residents will travel to popular tourist objects in various regions.

Irwan appealed to regents and mayors to continue the policy of closing tourist attractions at least until May 29, 2020 so that no one traveled.

Since yesterday there were 478 W Sumatra residents have been tested positive for COVID-19 infection. That number almost meets the capacity of the hospital's alert bed, which is 500 units during an emergency.

Discipline of citizens will greatly affect efforts to break the spread of COVID-19 in the province. However, ahead of Eid their discipline began to be "slack". Many crowds occur, especially at the points that sell the needs of Eid.

It is feared that the number of infected W Sumatra residents will surge after Eid Al-fitr 1441 Hijri due to they did not follow the health protocol related to the COVID-19.
