Previously the Mayor of Padang Mahyeldi proposed to the Government of West Sumatra Province to temporarily stop the flight as an effort to prevent Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19).

"On behalf of the Padang City Government I encourage the West Sumatra Provincial Government to temporarily close the Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) so that the spread of COVID-19 can be minimized," he said.

According to him, the temporary suspension of flights has been carried out in various countries such as Malaysia and has proven effective in suppressing the spread of corona.

PT Angkasa Pura II conveyed that the temporary closure of the airport to prevent the spread of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) was the authority of the Ministry of Transportation.

"Regarding the proposal of several parties to temporarily close the Minangkabau airport, it is not our authority because Angkasa Pura II is only an operator that performs operational service functions," said EGM PT AP II BIM Branch Yos Suwagiyono

He said if there were no command from the Central Office or the Ministry of Transportation, BIM would continue to provide maximum services to airport service users without exception.

He acknowledged the current situation, many airlines cancel flights because indeed the number of passengers also dropped.

In fact, most airlines combine two flights into one with a larger aircraft size, he said.

On the other hand BIM has operationally implemented a security protocol to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

It is not easy to monitor thousands of passengers, but we have tried to minimize the spread of the virus by collaborating with the KKP of the Airport and other stakeholders, he said.
