Pariaman (ANTARA) - The efforts of the City Government of Pariaman, W Sumatra in maintaining citizens who are elderly in order to remain productive deserve a thumbs up.

It was proven that 35 percent of the 12,637 elderly in the area were still productive, and had activities ranging from opening a business to becoming embroidery craftsmen.

What is the secret ?, We made the center of activity for the elderly named the Rumah Lansia Sehat Sentosa, said Mayor of Pariaman, Genius Umar at the W Sumatra Level Elderly Healthy and Elderly Gymnastics Competition in Pariaman, on Tuesday.

He said the center of the activity was inaugurated by the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection some time ago.

In these homes the elderly have a number of activities including gymnastics, reading, reciting, even embroidering which are held on Saturday and Sunday.

"With these activities, the elderly do not feel alone at home," he said.

He said that with the construction of houses that have a number of activities, the elderly in the area felt the presence of a government responsible for its citizens ranging from the womb to death.

Head of the Department of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection in Pariaman City, Nazifah said that there were 3,808 elderly men and 5,270 elderly women in the area, while the elderly had 1,326 men and 2,233 women.

"While the pre-elderly is 6,402 men while the women are 6,560," he said.

He explained that pre-elderly were at the age of 45 to 59 years, then the elderly at the age of 60 to 69 years, while the resti-elderly agreed to be 70 years and above.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the W Sumatra National Craft Council, Nevi Irwan Prayitno encouraged local governments to optimize the productivity of the elderly.

"Abroad, many elderly people are still productive even to death, because the government system gives attention to the elderly," he said.

He said the elderly people at the end of their age must enjoy what they like while the younger ones must pay attention to it.

He appreciated the Pariaman City Government, which has built an old house and according to him, it must be copied by the regency and other cities in W Sumatra.

The provincial level healthy elderly and gymnastic competition was followed by 12 regencies and cities in W Sumatra to commemorate the 23rd national elderly day.
