Pariaman (ANTARA) - The Pariaman City Government, W Sumatra, is determined to revive the Batik Tanah Liat Sampan which claimed to have been brought by Javanese merchants to the area in 1946.

"Later we make the rules that require ASN and other employees at Pariaman to wear this batik at least once a week," said Mayor of Pariaman Genius Umar at Pariaman, on Monday.

He said before applying the regulation, he would first prepare the design so that his motives could be accepted by the wider community.

He conveyed that by applying these rules, the batik that had been lifted around 2012 was acceptable to the community with a typical Pariaman motif.

At least in that area there are 20 houses of batik artisans based in Dusun Sampan, Pungguang Ladiang Village, Pariaman Selatan District that can produce batik with different motifs from other regions.

The Head of the Pariaman Industry and Cooperative Trade Office in the City of Pariaman, Gusniyetti Zaunit said that previously batik in the area was known as Batik Tanah Liat.

"But now we change the name to Batik Sampan," he said.

He said his party would hold a contest to design a Batik Sampan motif in October 2019 while the initial introduction would be held on Saturday, July 13.

With the preparations made and the rules that will be made, he continued, craftsmen can be more productive because they have had difficulty marketing their works.

Meanwhile the Deputy Governor of W Sumatra Nasrul Abit when opening Pariaman Expo 2019 emphasized that the Pariaman City Government prioritizes using batik in the area so that it is known by the wider community.

"If we don't buy the work of this regional craftsman, who else," he said. (*)
