Batusangkar, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Wife of Vice President (VP) of Republic of Indonesia Mrs. Mufidah Jusuf Kalla inaugurated center of the largest weaving industry in Indonesia residing in Nagari (traditional village) Tigo Jangko, Tanah Datar District, West Sumatra on Tuesday (May 8).

She conveyed the development of weaving center began from her attention to the existence of weaving throughout Indonesia which has tremendous potential, one of them is in West Sumatra.

"I noticed that Indonesia has a tremendous weaving potential," she noted.

Some songkets in West Sumatra have beautiful shapes, ranging from colors to motifs used. Some songket looms are even already known abroad and they are in great demand by tourists as a souvenir.

Meanwhile Tanah Datar Regent, Irdinansyah Tarmizi said the existence of the existing weaving industry center is an initiative of Mufidah Jusuf Kalla.

He said other than Pandai Sikek, Lintau is another area in Tanah Datar which also has a weaving craft.

According to him, the center of weaving will not only be reserved for Lintau or Tanah Datar people, but it is open to all young generation in West Sumatra who want to learn weaving.

Although currently there are only a few buildings, but Irdinansyah mentioned the existing facilities are sufficient for operational implementation.

"In fact, we have trained 70 young people to weave who are not only come from Lintau, but also from other regions," he added. (cha)
