90 Percent of Coral Reefs Grow Well: Advocates of Underwater Lovers

Pariaman, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The communities and advocates of underwater lovers namely Tabuik Diving Club (TDC) said about 90 percent of coral reefs planted around the waters of Ujuang Island, Pariaman Municipality, West Sumatra managed to live and grow well .

"The results are known after a direct monitoring to coral reef park initiated by PT Pertamina Depot Filling Minangkabau Aircraft with the government of Pariaman and TDC community in 2017," Chairman of TDC of Pariaman, Aksa Prawira stated in Pariaman, Monday.

He said the Acropora Branching coral reefs have been around six months old. The planting is an effort to save environment under the sea by related parties.

Specifically for dead coral reefs, he said, in general it happened because the substrate for the installation of Acropora Branching coral species which was detached from the iron frame due to rapid flow of underwater currents.

"Apart from being released due to the rapid flow of underwater currents, a small part of coral reefs are also dead due to sedimentation factors that have an impact on their growth," he explained.

But some of 15 percent of coral reefs that are released from the iron frame can survive on the seabed.

Since it began construction in September 2017, TDC community has been monitoring and clearing coral gardens twice, he added. (cha)
