Padang Pariaman Produces 35.6 Thousand Tons of Coconut in 2017

Parit Malintang, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Head of Agricultural and Food Security Office of Padang Pariaman District, West Sumatra Yurisman Yakub said the area can produced 35.6 thousand tons of coconut in 2017 or increased around 200 tons from the previous year that only produce 35.4 thousand tons.

"In 2016, the coconut production was 35.4 thousand tons, while in 2015 there was 35.1 thousand tons," he said in Parit Malintang on Thursday.

He mentioned the coconut production area is around 25 thousand hectares from 40 thousand hectares coconut area that owned by local farmer.

The area that produce most coconut is Sungai Geringging Sub-district with 6.4 thousand tons production per year.

Then, Koto Aur Malintang Sub-district has 3.4 thousand tons production per year, and Ulakan Tapakis Sub-district 2.7 thousand tons per year.

The coconut does not only fulfill local citizen needs, but also sale to other areas such as Padang, Pariaman, Pekanbaru, and Jakarta.

Beside selling in form of raw material, local farmer also processes it to become virgin coconut oil (VCO).

One of the farmer groups in that area able to produce VCO as much as 2 tons per month and it marketed to Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru, and Padang. (cha/el)
