Women Had Become Agricultural Pioneer in Padang Pariaman

Parit Malintang, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Head of Agriculture and Food Security Agency of Padang Pariaman District, West Sumatra, Yurisman Yakub said women's position had been the pioneer of agriculture through a group of women farmers (KWT) to maintain food security in the area.

"Women used to be the only complement to help men but now they have become pioneers of agriculture," he said in Parit Malintang on Thursday.

He explained the role of women as a pioneer because nowadays women take part in maintaining food security by forming KWT and succeeding the sustainable food of the area.

Women's activities do not only grow vegetables in their home and paddy in their fields, but also the cultivation of oyster mushrooms.

The yields grown and the cultivation of KWT are not only used for daily necessities but also sold to supply family income.

He mentioned one of KWT moves on oyster mushroom is KWT Mekar Sari in Nagari Sicincin 2x11 Enam Lingkung that can produce 25 kilograms of oyster mushrooms per month.

In addition, the KWT is engaged in the cultivation of oyster mushrooms in IV Koto Aur Malintang. Besides, rhtere are groups of women who grow vegetables and even make processed products too.

The products produced are sweet potato chips, spinach crackers, jerky cassava leaves, and papaya leaf jerky.

He said the current number of KWT in the area reached 159 groups of 1,292 farmer groups and it will continue to provide guidance to improve the economic level of Padang Pariaman residents through agriculture. (cha)
