W Sumatra is Suitable for Seafish Cultivation

Padang, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Most of West Sumatra province water are considered suitable for seafish farming because the current is relatively calm and has good ecology, Head of Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office Yummeri stated.

"The good ecological conditions for seafish cultivation is in 24 to 31 degrees celsius, salinity or salt content level at 30 to 33 ppt, dissolved oxygen 3.5 ppm and pH 7.8-8," he explained in Padang on Monday.

The area of water that has the potential to develop seafish reached 12 thousand hectares which spreaded in several districts and municipalities in the province.

At least the potential is in South Pesisir District such as in Sungai Pinang, Nyalo, Mandeh Area, Bungin River and Kasai Bay.

Then in the city of Padang among others in Bungus Teluk Kabung.

Mentawai Islands is also very potential in the area of North Pagai, Sipora, and Siberut.

West Pasaman also has potential for the development of fishery commodities that can be exported.

Currently the existing potential has not worked maximally. There are only about 1,800 fishers in West Sumatra with an average of fish production at number of 100 tons per year.

But, Yosmeri reminded for the area that wants to be a center of seafish cultivation, it should still pay attention to the volume of harvest, at least 15 tons, because it becomes one of the requirements for foreign ships can enter. (cha)
