Padang, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Provincial Government of West Sumatra targets the production of aquaculture in 2018 are 242,314 tons or up from 2017 which only 234,369 tons.

"The production of aquaculture is dominated by freshwater cultivation with pond media such as mujair fish," Head of Marine and Fisheries Office of West Sumatra, Yosmeri stated in Padang on Friday.

According to him, the largest aquaculture production in Agam District is 49,494 tons, Padang Pariaman 49,100 tons, Pasaman 46,350 tons and Limapuluh Kota 39,117 tons.

Next Dharmasraya District 17,739 tons, South Pesisir 10,964 tons, Sijunjung 9,120 tons, Tanah Datar 5,942 tons and West Pasaman 5,745 tons.

From the production result, freshwater aquaculture production is 241,766 tons, sea cultivation 278.60 tons, and pond culture or brackish 269.54 tons.

"For the media ponds are usually fish cultivated such as mujair, mas and catfish," he said.

The products are quite stable as in 2015 production reached 286,711 tons, 2016 as much as 269,837 tons and 2017 reached 234.3 tons.

Besides, the production is gotten from grouper farming in South Pesisir District, Padang City, Pasaman Barat Regency, Mentawai Islands District, and Agam Regency.

The production of freshwater aquaculture in the country also supports regional economic growth, providing employment in the countryside while improving the welfare of the people, he added. (cha)
