Padang Aro, (Antaranews Sumbar) - The corn production of South Solok, West Sumatra reaches 95,862 tons in 2017 or lower than the target set at 103,932 tons, local government officials said.

"The production achievement is 92.23 percent or less than the target because the land is less available, especially the integration with the palm," Head of South Solok Agriculture Agency Tri Handoyo Gunardi said in Padang Aro, Tuesday.

Throughout 2017, South Solok corn planting area was 14,437 hectares while the target reached 15,497 hectares.

While the harvested area was below 15,030 hectares or 95.83 percent of the target set 15,684 hectares.

In 2017, South Solok integrates oil palm plantations with maize centered in Sangir Jujuan Sub-district.

Hybrid corn seeds distributed for the integration of palm with corn of ori bima type and land of Sangir Sub-district which is the center of corn of pioneer type 33 which is coordinated by Agricultural Technology Assessment Institute (BPTP) of West Sumatra.

Corn crops are grown in non-wet rice field that do not have irrigation.

"We also maintain the production of rice so that corn cultivation is prohibited in productive fields," he said.

Related to the production target in 2018, it has not been determined by the local government.

It is still conducting studies and gathering data for 2018 target.

"This year's target will likely not change much because the land is still the same," he added. (cha)
