Jakarta, (Antaranews Sumbar) - Research, Technology and Higher Education Minister Mohamad Nasir will run merger mechanism to establish only 3,500 universities in Indonesia.

"The merger will apply to private universities with under 1,000 students in order to efficiency. From 4,570 public universities and privates will be merged to only 3,500 universities," the minister said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to Nasir, five to six universities from one foundation will be merged.

Reflecting to China with a population of 1.4 billion but only has half the number of universities in Indonesia, according to him, universities merger to improve quality is very important.

There is a concern that many small universities will produce less qualified graduates, but indeed the implementation of universities merger is not easy.

However, he said, great research and innovation come from good education. Therefore, efforts to improve the quality of higher education in Indonesia can be carried out by running the merger program.

In addition to the merger, Nasir will also dissolve the Private Universities Coordinating Body (Kopertis) in 2018, then replace it with the Higher Education Service Institution (LL DIKTI) to coordinate both public and private universities.

Included in the reform program of 2018, the LL DIKTI is expected to improve the work of the Directorate General of Institutional Services to be faster and easier. (*)
