Parit Malintang, (Antara Sumbar) - The Regent of Padangpariaman District, West Sumatra, Ali Mukhni said Batang Anai water located in Lubuk Alung Sub-district has the potential to be developed into hydropower.

"A small amount of Batang Anai water is used for irrigation but the rest is wasted in the sea," he said in Parit Malintang on Tuesday.

In fact, he continued the rest of the water can be used for hydropower although the power generated is not as big as in Singkarak.

He said to take advantage of water power, it will bring investors to Batang Anai to see the potential of river water which is coming from Lake of Singkarak.

"Investors from China have expressed interest and in the near future I will take him to Batang Anai," he said.

He has not been able to determine the amount of investment from Chinese investors, but the investor from that country had previously invested its shares in East Kalimantan amounting to Rp800 billion.

He said the potential of Batang Anai water is also expressed by Minister of State Owned Enterprises Rini Soemarno during a visit to the area last month.

"At that time, Rini regretted Batang Anai water wasted to the sea," he said.

He hopes Chinese investors in the near future can visit the location and want to make a hydropower plant so that the potential of natural resources in the district can be utilized properly. (cha)
