Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - The Government of Padang Municipality, West Sumatra, focuses on strengthening flood control infrastructure through the development of canal flooding and even distribution of drainage in disaster prone areas.

"Flood problems have always been our priority every time, from the existing infrastructure to prevent disaster impact," Padang Mayor Mahyeldi Ansharullah stated in Padang on Tuesday.

As a first step, it has coordinated with the Ministry of Public Works related to development of the infrastructure.

The result has been an agreement for the provision of development assistance to Padang related to some infrastructure such as channel of flood and drainage water channel.

In order to flood the canal, Padang will get assistance from the Ministry of Public Works-PU-PR in the form of Batang Kandis River normalization in 2019, Primary Drainage Masterplan Making in 2018 and this year in the form of Batang Arau River dredging.

In addition to these three aids, it also proposed the construction of a primary drainage channel from north to south along By Pass road.

According to the drainage development plan, it will be in line with the completion of the two By Pass line.

"In total, flood control infrastructure in Padang had cost Rp1 Trillion," he said.

To fulfill it, it still allocates funds through Regional Budget (APBD) but the central assistance is clearly needed to solve it.

In addition, it opens wide for people who want to invest related to flood mitigation in Padang.

"Given the extreme rain which often occurs, the chances of flooding is large enough for the construction of control infrastructure needs to be hastened," he added.

Meanwhile, environmental observers from University of Andalas Dr Ardinis Arbain assess to control floods in Padang, it needs a rearrangement of the city.

According to him, there are some segments in the city that have violated the rules causing the impact of greater flooding.

For example, road concrete must still provide an open water channel, in order to facilitate the flow of water during heavy rains. (cha)
